Apothecary jars were used to store and preserve crude and compounded drugs, in both dry and liquid forms. They were made from a variety of materials including wood, glass, ceramic, and metal. They came in various shapes and sizes: Tall-waisted albarelli and wide-mouth jars were used to store dry, bulky material such as leaves, bark, and flowers. Syrup jars with spouts and handles were used for liquids. Small, thin-necked containers held minute quantities of liquids.

In 2003, archaeologists uncovered what are believed to be the world's oldest surviving perfumes in Pyrgos, Cyprus. The perfumes date back more than 4,000 years. They were discovered in an ancient perfumery, a 300-square-meter (3,230 sq ft) factory housing at least 60 stills, mixing bowls, funnels, and perfume bottles. In ancient times people used herbs and spices, such as almond, coriander, myrtle, conifer resin, and bergamot, as well as flowers.

Holes had been cut into the lid to allow for air, and the pharmacist stocked the jar with leeches intended for sale that day. The jar’s elaborate presentation indicates the high value leeches held as a commodity, as they were sold in great numbers to members of both the medical profession and the public.

The original interior fittings of the Apothecary, all in use until 1964, have been painstakingly restored. The hub of the Apothecary was the ornately carved dispensary, which dominates the rear of the museum. With the exception of certain proprietary drugs, even pills were made at the dispensary.

The Niagara Apothecary opened its doors at its present location in 1869. It is the only surviving building of that time in the town. The Niagara Apothecary operated for nearly 150 years under a succession of six owners, starting about 1818/1820, at another location in town, and it closed in 1964 due to the ill health of the last pharmacist owner.
